I have had this problem a few times. In my experience it just comes back to normal after some time. I do not know why it happens though. Maybe if you wait some time it will come back.
Just letting you know,

Unless you have changed your ingame settings it's most likely a corrupted gw.dat file, you can search these forums for the "-image" command line which would fix any corruptions in that file.

Before you do the -image, try enabling and disabling the 3D or EAX Audio checkboxes in the sounds tab, usualy that resets it all for me.

The guild wars in game settings wont let me enable the 3D or EAX Audio... and honestly i have no idea what to do with the -image.

Thats strange, well mine never had sound with 3D or EAX on but I always used it to reset the sound if need be (because the box was checkable) but now that box is greyed over for me too... O.o

If I remember it right...if you have DirectX 8, you may get only the background music. Make sure you have DirectX 9...if you do, try reinstall it?

What the -image does is re-download your gw.dat file. This file on your computer contains most of the static information in the game. It is a very long download so best done while away from home for several hours or overnight.
1. rename your current gw.dat file
2. follow the instructions for converting your Guild Wars desktop shortcut to add the -image command http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/-image#-image
3. Double click the converted Guild Wars shortcut
4. go to bed or school or work, etc.
5. When the download is complete, remove the -image from the shortcut
6. Start the game and hopefully your problem will have disappeared.

yes - follow the instructions above ^^^ - it will take 6+ hours on standard DSL (hopefully, obviously depends on your ISP among other things) if you have already mapped to all locations ingame.
